Well I have a number of valid reason why this is unworkable which am I not about to get into a discussion about now.
But you already are in a discussion about it!

Does db maintenance remain in r5 until all users have migrated to nd6?
Or until all servers are upgraded. Have you tested the cominbation of Domino 6, Designer 6 with client R5? I think you might find that's okay. (No, I haven't tested myself).

I'm not saying that this isn't a problem. But it's not a major one in my book. And there's the workaround of keepting two versions of Domino Designer on your machine. That's possible, as Ben said.
